Precision aquaculture, made affordable: from water data to food security

Food security begins where food is produced. For aquaculture, that means starting with the water.

From 8 to 12 October 2026, FAO’s From Seeds to Foods exhibition brings the journey of food to Circo Massimo in Rome. Its theme, innovation for food security and nutrition, raises a practical question: how can useful technology help the people who produce our food?

Precision aquaculture and food security

In aquaculture, part of the answer lies in understanding conditions below the surface. Temperature, dissolved oxygen and other water parameters influence the environment in which fish and shellfish grow. Tracking changes gives farmers information they can use to assess conditions and decide when to act.

Precision aquaculture connects that information with practical management. It brings together sensing, recorded data and equipment control, helping operators respond to conditions and review what happened over time. FAO describes this approach in its work with shrimp farms in Peru, where water sensors support decisions about farm management.

The connection to food security is practical: better-informed management can support more reliable production and more efficient use of resources. The connection to food quality starts with healthy growing conditions and consistent production practices. Water data gives farmers another tool for managing that environment.

Precision aquaculture, made affordable

For innovation to make a difference, farmers need to be able to use it. Cost, installation and everyday operation all affect whether precision tools become part of routine farm management. Affordability matters because it determines how widely the benefits can reach.

This is the idea behind netH2O B200-5: precision aquaculture, made affordable.

The base buoy includes an onboard data logger, automatic cloud upload, cloud storage and access to stored data through the Sensorica Data Platform. Application-specific sensor packs, available separately, let operators configure it for their needs. Alongside sensing, the buoy can also be used to control equipment, connecting knowledge of conditions with action.
