Stingerbend
StingerBend
An innovative sea pool, which forms a protected area where you can swim, play or relax. The StingerBend functions as a barrier against ocean stingers like jellyfish and pollutants while accommodating varying water depths and tidal ranges.
Primary Features & Benefits
Adaptive Design
Automatically adapts to varying water depth conditions
Jellyfish Protection
Effective barrier against jellyfish and other ocean stingers
Storm Stability
Remains stable despite significant swell
Safe Swimming Spaces
Can create confined swimming spaces for vulnerable populations
Coastal Protection
Supports coastal erosion mitigation projects
Educational Use
Deployable for sports instruction and diving courses
Key Advantages
- Effective jellyfish protection
- Remains stable despite significant swell
- Can create confined swimming spaces for vulnerable populations
- Supports coastal erosion mitigation projects
- Deployable for sports instruction and diving courses
- Allows plankton passage while blocking larger stingers
Installation & Environmental Considerations
Assembly and removal require minimal training and can be executed by local personnel multiple times weekly. The design allows plankton passage while blocking larger stingers like Pelagia noctiluca and Carybdea marsupialis, maintaining coastal ecosystem health.
Application Examples
The first installation (2017) was deployed in Forte dei Marmi, Tuscany, Italy. Configurations range from 10m×10m for children's play areas to larger adult swimming dimensions.
Technical Design
The structure uses a "concertina-like" design rather than rigid panels, allowing it to expand or contract in response to water depth changes.
